Review

Summary: Up in the Air is about a man, Ryan, who regards himself as a ‘Termination Agent’, who is also a workaholic. He was trying to make connections with the world from within and without. However, he found that his service is no longer needed when technology stole his job from him.



Review: Basically the main setting of the movie Up in the Air happens up in the air! Did I lose you? Up in the Air revolves around a man named Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), who constantly flies from place to place to deliver bad news to employees. This is because employers hire Ryan to break out the news that they are fired from their company. So, Ryan terms himself as a ‘Termination Agent’ since ‘Terminator’ will be challenged by legal issues. A very good quote from the movie was; “I work for another company that lends me out to pussies like Steve's boss, who don't have the balls to sack their own employees.”

Ryan is a workaholic who has no time for romance as he is constantly on the go. So one day he met this attractive blonde business woman named Alex Gordon (Vera Farmiga) at a bar in Dallas Hilton Hotel. She first notices that Ryan has American Airlines Concierge Key and was impressed by it. So she asked whether it was made of Carbon Fibre but Ryan modestly replied that it was just graphite. They exchanged their usual comments and compared business card. However, things picked up when they challenged who flew the furthest in a year and things like that.

Soon, they ended up in bed together.

However, things took a turn for Ryan as the company he is working for no longer needs Ryan’s service due to technological improvement. The company introduced an on-line monitor that will be used to fire people from remote location via the internet. So human resource agents like Ryan would no longer be needed. Therefore, Ryan would have to learn the ropes all over again after being forced into admission by his employers.

In a nutshell, the movie Up in the Air highlights the plights of workers who were retrenched during the economic downturn. The fact that one day these workers were coming to work assuming that they will carry out their daily tasks were met by a person like Ryan who would tell them that they were fired, was the worst thing that could ever happen.
